Things I was disappointed to find in Michigan / the UP:
Bad drivers - My overall impression was that they were pushy and liked to hug the center line. What does that accomplish?
Back roads that don't go anywhere - Was that really faster? .... Really?
Closing time - Everything closes rather early... except the bars. After dinner coffee? Sorry, closes at 5.
Convenient stores - Not so convenient. And for some reason, it's mostly BP.
Ghost towns being re-inhabited - For those of us who go searching for ghost towns it sucks to show up after driving around in vain for an hour only to discover a man painting one of the houses and a nice row of mailboxes. Nice.
Things I loved about Michigan / the UP:
The speed limit seems optional: 55mph? How does 70 work for you?
The fact that state patrol/sherrifs/police are not... what's the word?... Present. - This makes the statement above so much better.
The gorgeous views - Hills, valleys, big rocks, wildflowers, small towns, lakes, ponds, trees... gorgeous.
Yoopers - Need I say more? I will. They are so friendly and helpful. Met this guy at a fire station who was running a voting booth, he helped us locate one of the abandoned areas we were looking for!
The sanitarium - We heard a rumor about an abandoned sanitarium and I really wanted to investigate until we heard the other half of the rumor. Apparently there is a guy who hangs around it with a gun and shoots at people who show up. Decided not to risk it. Even if it's not true, it's a pretty awesome story!
The beach - The shores of Lake Superior in the UP are phenomenal! So gorgeous! The water is nice and clear, the beaches are nice and the people are pretty tolerant of dogs!
Large statues of things - I seem to recall a large skier and a big red hat... I don't remember it's specific name. There's also a big fish in Ashland, Wisconsin.
The amazing summer weather - Not too hot and not too cold; all you need is a light jacket.
