Review of Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith's "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies"

It’s taken me a while to actually finish this book for several reasons. The first reason is that I just got a Kindle… which I have mentioned several times because it’s awesome. Anyway, the reason that this is a reason is that I have been a little distracted as you will see by my subsequent posts. The second reason is that I have read “Pride & Prejudice” several times before. I will explain why this is a reason a little bit later. The third reason is that my expectations were a little high. My theory is that the lower your expectations, the less likely you are to be disappointed. “Pride & Prejudice” is one of my favorite books, and zombies are freaking awesome… what could possibly go wrong?

Things I liked about this book:
  • I liked how the original text was basically intact.
  • I liked the important twists in the story… like certain characters getting the strange plague.
  •  I really like the Collins’ story… it might have been my favorite part of the book.

Things I did not like about this book:
  • I wish the author had taken a few more liberties with the actual text.
  • It was rather anti-climactic.
  • There was no back story about the plague. A little would have been nice. My faith in the author’s ability to write has been lessened by the fact that the majority of the story is not his writing.

The reason this book took so long to get through was that I’ve read “Pride & Prejudice” several times before. There were few twists or turns that I was not already familiar with. I am also overly familiar with the dialogue having seen the BBC version of the movie many times.

Perhaps I would have been more involved in the story if I wasn’t so familiar with it.

Would I recommend this book to others? Probably. I really love P&P, and I am rather fond of zombies. If you aren’t overly familiar with the story, it would probably be a really exciting story. I’m glad I actually read it. Honestly, the Collins’ are my favorite part of the story, and I kinda want to read their parts again. For those of you that are familiar with the story, when I refer to the Collins’ I am including Charlotte Lucas. I don’t know if I would go around raving about this book, but I’m glad my sister got it for me for Christmas and that I read it. Zombies never cease to amuse…. Unless they’re eating your brains.

For the record, these reviews are my personal opinions about the books I volunteer to read. I'm not getting paid by anyone to read or review them. A lot of people charge a penny for their thoughts... mine are free.
