Another Star Trek Post

10/22/2013

We have now finished watching the movies through "First Contact". There is something I have noticed that bothers me a little. The original Star Trek, and The Next Generation do a pretty good job of displaying the future as a utopia, or at least moving towards a utopia. In the fourth movie, "The Voyage Home", the future is solar powered and clean. They don't use money because their economics are so stable and they don't need money. The farther into the series you get, the less utopian the future gets. Is this in response to society's interest in a dystopian future?

Think about it. Right now people love disaster movies, they love zombie movies, they love outbreak movies, Mad Max type movies. How can a utopian franchise even compete?  The fact that Star Trek was so successful makes me think that people still want to look towards the future as a sort of utopia, where things keep getting better. But the darker side of humanity is fascinated by how bad it could really become. Just a thought.

I used to drive past this all the time and I always wondered why the barbed wire was facing inwards. Normally, if you don't want something or someone to get into an area, the barbed wire on the fence would point outwards. Either the person who put up the fence is wholly incompetent or the children who play on that playground are more dangerous than I would care to imagine. It's Houston, so I feel like both of these options are legitimate.

With the death of Neil Armstrong and an episode of Doctor Who, I got to thinking.

When The Eagle landed on the moon, people all over were watching from home. With the advent of the television, it helped people unite and be excited about something. Kids all over pretended they were astronauts and some fell so in love with the idea of space study and travel that they later pursued careers in those fields. It was an exciting and momentous occasion. People came together to share it.

TC and I recently watched an episode of Doctor Who entitled "The Idiot's Lantern". The story takes place around the same time as the Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1952. Rose keeps mentioning that televisions weren't common and people were all jam-packed in living rooms to watch the coronation together. It was a moment in history when people came together to celebrate something great.

This is my question:

On a national level, what sort of event would have to happen to get people to unite like that again?  9/11 had the world's attention and brought a lot of people closer together. When Curiosity landed on Mars, people were watching, but now that we can access news any time we want, we didn't all watch it live or together. Has the availability of information killed any chance of coming together like the US did in 1969 or the UK did in 1952?

I'm excited to hear your opinions, please leave comments!

75th Post and Teleportation

4/14/2011

One of my most used labels or tags for this blog is "time travel". Well, that usually leads to other, wonderful thoughts. Today, my thought was about teleportation.

Now, for the sake of clarification, this is teleportation like in "The Fly" where technology allows for instant teleportation from point A to point B. This has nothing to do with evolution, mutation, or superpowers.

The actual point of this blog is that the sense of adventure with the advent of teleportation will actually decrease. This is why I think this:
Each major city will have at least one teleportation device. Your range of travel from that point is limited. Say I wanted to go to Rome for the weekend. I would just hop in a teleporter and head to Rome, wander around the city and head back. It makes me think of the Olympics being held in Beijing. They spent a lot of money and time making sure the area around the olympic stadium was beautiful and pristine, but go a couple blocks in a different direction and you'll get a better idea of "real life" where people go to work each day and aren't flooded with tourists etc.

What teleportation would do for travel is phenomenal, but then who would take the time to see the deserts of Africa, the rainforests of Costa Rica, and the Australian outback? Spend the weekend in Sydney and then go home. So, while transportation would open the door for travel, it would also limit it. The ease of getting across the world would be far more preferable than taking an 18 hour drive into the middle of nowhere (for most people anyway).

When actual teleportion is implemented throughout the world, tourism will be much more efficient. The lanes of traffic will be more precise, and hopefully, those wannabe adventurers will leave those of us who actually prefer "roughing it" alone. One day I hope to see a teleportation pod type thing in the middle of a field or like a train station.

These are my thoughts, they are mine, they are my own. I would like to know yours... so feel free to share!

For those of you that don't know, this is a picture of family guy that parodies The Fly (with Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis). Look it up if you want to really know what this picture is about.

I was sent this picture because of my love for Jurassic Park. This makes me happy in many ways, I hope you all enjoy...

A Lesson in Greek

7/10/2010

There is a word in Greek that implies such a strong emotion that there is a physical reaction, a physical pain associated with it. Luke 19:41 in the original Greek employs this word:
41 καὶ ὡς ἤγγισεν, ἰδὼν τὴν πόλιν ἔκλαυσεν ἐπ' αὐτῇ, λέγων
41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it

In this verse, Jesus felt such a strong compassion for the city that he was literally weeping in anguish. Have you ever felt something so strongly that you were physically in pain because of it? I imagine intense grief, loneliness, loss, love, compassion, and pride are the most common.  For some reason, this has been on my mind lately.  Don't know why, but there it is.  A random tidbit of information for you...

Time is on My Side

11/18/2009

I randomly posed a question to one of my friends the other day. My question was:

Hypothetically speaking, if a planet had intelligent beings and never rotated or revolved so one side always had light, then would the intelligent beings have a concept of time?

I realize there is a lot to think about in this situation, like food sources and supply and if the intelligent beings needed sleep. For a moment though, my mind was truly boggled to consider life without a concept of measured time.

...I've been watching Stargate SG1.

Penny for Your Thoughts

11/7/2009

I have to stop and ask a simple question. Why do people offer a penny to hear some one else's thoughts, but spend two pennies to put in their own? It sounds like a rip off to me. A penny for your thoughts... Well, here's my two cents.

Any insight is appreciated. Hey, you might even make some money out of it! Most likely not, but it's fun to dream.
